What is an ACID?

ACID is Egypt's advance cargo information system. Unlike most cargo tracking notes, it links the exporter and the Egyptian importer directly: the importer registers the shipment and an ACID number is issued against it, which must then appear on the shipping documents before the cargo is dispatched.

Egypt moved to advance declaration to tighten control over declared values and importer identity. The consequence for shippers is that the Egyptian importer has to act before the goods leave, which makes coordination between the two parties more important here than in most destinations.

Full name: Advance Cargo Information Declaration. The reference number must be endorsed on the final Bill of Lading before the container is loaded.

Who obtains the ACID number?
The Egyptian importer registers the shipment and the number is issued to them. The exporter then quotes it on the shipping documents. This differs from most cargo tracking notes, where the shipper applies.

Alexandria, Damietta, Port Said and Sokhna.
What happens without an ACID number?
Cargo can be refused entry. Egypt enforces this strictly, and shipments arriving without a valid number face return or substantial penalties.
When must it be obtained?
Before the goods are shipped. The number has to appear on the documents accompanying the cargo, so it cannot be arranged in transit.
