What is an ICTN?

The ICTN is Nigeria's form of the cargo tracking note, filed before loading for containerised imports. Nigeria has more commercial ports in the certification group than any other destination, and the declaration must name the correct terminal.

Lagos alone handles a very large share of West African container traffic through Apapa and Tin Can Island, with further volume at Onne, Port Harcourt, Calabar and Warri. Congestion at the Lagos terminals makes advance declaration particularly valuable, since a held container in Apapa accrues cost quickly.

Full name: International Cargo Tracking Note. The reference number must be endorsed on the final Bill of Lading before the container is loaded.
Questions

ICTN FAQs

Which Nigerian ports require an ICTN?
Apapa and Tin Can Island in Lagos, plus Onne, Port Harcourt, Calabar and Warri.
Does the declaration have to name the terminal?
Yes. Nigeria operates several terminals and the declaration should match the discharge terminal on the Bill of Lading.
Is the ICTN the same as an ECTN?
It is Nigeria's national implementation of the same instrument, issued under its own name and valid only for Nigerian ports.
What happens if the container is held?
Cargo is held until the declaration is regularised. Given congestion at the Lagos terminals, demurrage and storage can accumulate faster here than at most other destinations.
